This talk will explore the world of marine micropaleontology and the 4 main groups that make up our marine fossil records: the diatoms, foraminifera, radiolarians and calcareous nannofossils. These fossils are fundamental to our understanding of the climate system and its changes over the past 150 million years. Learn about the expeditions which collect these fossils from ocean bottom and how they not only let us understand how past examples of climate changes have worked, but also let us find oil and gas. Lastly, we’ll talk about some of the most recent advances in their study and what some of the open questions are.
Speaker: Andy Fraass, assistant professor of earth and ocean sciences, University of Victoria
