A major emergency response began just after 10:00pm yesterday at Port Kembla in the NSW Illawarra region, following reports several people had been washed off rocks and into the sea.
Witnesses told police the group was standing on rocks fishing near an area known as Hill 60, when they were hit by the wave.
The bodies of the three men were recovered overnight following a search involving police, paramedics, rescue helicopters and local lifeguards.
