Libya's artistic community is coming together to showcase their work, despite the conflict in the country.
An organisation in Benghazi has launched an annual festival which aims to encourage young people to get involved in the arts.
STORY-LINE:
Libyan musicians are gathered on the stage at the Tanarout festival, a showcase for Libyan talent and an opportunity for them to perform in front of a local audience.
Held in the Children's Theatre in Benghazi on Saturday, the festival is an initiative launched to recruit emerging talents in music, poetry, and visual arts.
The name Tanarout derives from a valley located in the southern Libyan Desert in the red Hamada, where Libyan civilisation was established and prospered in the valley's oases 6000 years ago.
The festival includes a local plastic arts exhibition, a Tanarout children's paintings display and a musical play performed by Tanarout association members, in addition to traditional music performances.
"Tanarout is an idea to support artists, their dreams, and to spread the creativity and talent of young people. We should encourage all art forms, from cinema, innovative writing and handwriting skills to music and fine arts," says event organiser Rehab Shenneib.
The festival provides a welcome distraction from daily problems in Benghazi.
"Tanarout provides educational workshops that discuss many innovative ideas, and you can find people of all ages, graduates, high school students and college students, girls and boys alike, the beautiful thing about Tanarout is its diversity," adds Rehab Shenneib.
Tanarout was established one year ago in Benghazi by a group of intellectuals who want to keep Libyan culture alive and provide a glimmer of hope to the people of Libya and Benghazi in particular.
They believe in the uplifting power of music, poetry and art.
"Some poetry was performed by storytellers who also sang, and thank God, the standard was high and we couldn't let more people to come in. We are very happy with this event and happy with the results," says head of the organisation Mohamed Al-Tarhoni.
It is hoped that similar initiatives will be launched around Libya.
