The Kurdish musical system is engrained in microtonal music which has spread across the vast area of the region across the Zagros mountains crossing Iraqi and Turkish borders through central Asia. This area is called Kurdistan. The vocal melodies have a significant character in structuring the themes and Kurdish modes (Maqams).
به ڕوویا زولفی پهخشان کردووه، لهیل و نههارێکه
له شهودا رۆژی پهنهان کردووه، شێوهی عوزارێکه
له ناو شاری دڵاندا جار ئهدهن کێ بێ که هوشیار بێ
له هیچ لاێێ جهواب ناێی، عهجهب خامۆش شارێکه
Be rûya zulfî pexşan krduwe, leyl û neharêke
le şewda rojî penhan krduwe, şêweyi 'uzarêke
Le naw şarî dllanda car eden kê bê ke huşiyar bê
le hîç laêê cewab naêy, 'eceb xamoş şarêke
