Before the establishment of Hyderabad in 1591, the area where the city stands today had various names and was under the rule of different rulers and dynasties.
One of the prominent names associated with the region before the founding of Hyderabad is "Bhagyanagar." Bhagyanagar was reportedly named after the Hindu goddess Bhagyalakshmi, whose temple existed in the area. The founder of the city, Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah, who was the fifth ruler of the Qutb Shahi dynasty, later changed the name to Hyderabad.
Golconda, as mentioned earlier, was also a significant name associated with the area, primarily due to the Golconda Fort and the diamond mines in the region. However, Golconda was more of a fortress and a center of power rather than a city or urban settlement.
Therefore, while Bhagyanagar is often cited as one of the earlier names associated with the area, the region has a long history with various names and rulers before the establishment of Hyderabad in 1591 by Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah.
