The infamous force choke ability was a dark side ability used to constrict the trachea of the victim, causing immense discomfort, passing out and even death.

So if this ability is so powerful, why don't Sith use it to incapacitate their enemies in battle, instead of endangering themselves in close quater combat with a Lightsaber?

As was the case with using any force abilities on abother force weilder, a user must first break through the force shield of the opponent.

This sheild prevented a user from being subjected to force powers and the strength of the shield depended greatly upon the strength of the user, their skill with the ability and above all their focus.


This is why powerful master's were able to sometimes use the force against their opponents. By causing opponents to waver in their concentration, the force sheild would weaken for a split second, with a powerful force user like Yoda or Palpatine able to exploit this weakness to gain the upper hand.

However, an ability like force choke took significantly longer to cause damage to an opponent than a well placed force push or source lightning would, making it easier for a Jedi to repel the attack.

What's more, using the force actually drained a user's force energy, energy that may be needed to increase their speed and agility in light saber combat. If a dark side weilder was to use the force choke ability, if they were not successful, they could become extremely vulnerable to a counter attack.


All this made using the force choke ability a very uncommon occurance in a duel and actually quite a risky move for any sith lord to make. Although we see Dooku using this ability on Obi wan Kenobi, it must be noted that it was only for a brief second, with dooku also being an extremely gifted force user. There is also speculation that Palpatine was helping dooku break through Obi Wans force shield in order to take him out of the fight, therefore explaining why it is such a rarely used ability in Star wars duels.
