Tragically, 38 year old Alan Kulwicki on Thursday April 2, 1993 died in a plane crash while enroute from Knoxville, TN to Tri-Cities Airport in Blountville, TN which is just a few miles from Bristol International Raceway. Five people were on the plane's passenger list but officials stated only four were actually on the plane which were Kulwicki, 26 year old Hooters Sports Marketing Manager Mark Brooks (son of Hooters Chairman Robert Brooks), 44 year old Hooters Director of Sports Management Dan Duncan and 48 year old Corporate Pilot Charlie Campbell. During the investigation it was found that Kulwicki, who had just left a personal appearance in Knoxville for Hooters, had called some people to meet him at the airport to go to dinner while in the air and he told them he would be there in about 20 to 25 minutes.

Air Traffic Controller Dale Cannon at Tri-Cities Airport lost radio contact at 9:29 PM with Alan Kulwicki's plane as it followed Dale Earnhardt's plane who was landing and Rusty Wallace's plane who had just landed minutes before. Earnhardt's pilot Mike Colyer stated he noticed nothing wrong and that Kulwicki's plane was about two miles behind them. The last radio transmission prior to the crash was Kulwicki's pilot Charlie Campbell stating "We are outside the marker" and Cannon in the airport tower answering stating it was clear to land on the second runway. Less than thirty seconds later the plane crashed.
