India’s AI landscape is entering a decisive phase — and in this conversation, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw lays out a bold, multi-layered roadmap for how the country plans to build a fully self-reliant AI ecosystem.
From the inauguration of 14,000 GPUs as a common national compute facility to the launch of AI Khoj, India is rapidly assembling the foundational blocks needed for large-scale AI development. The minister explains how access to massive, multilingual datasets — including those from Parliament, Doordarshan, All India Radio and more — will power India’s own AI models and accelerate innovation.
A key highlight: India is now working on its own GPU chip, partnering with industry, startups, and academia to design hardware optimized for future AI workloads. Vaishnaw also stresses the need for India to build its own LLM, citing concerns that today’s open-source models may not remain open tomorrow.
Drawing parallels with the semiconductor mission, he argues that India is prepared to replicate that success in the AI sector — provided the government backs the mission with $20–30 billion in long-term infrastructure investment.
This video captures India’s ambition to move from being a major digital economy to becoming a global AI power, rooted in secure datasets, indigenous hardware, and sovereign AI capability.
