► Did you know that some of the most serious dermatologic conditions don’t just affect the skin but also involve the mucosal surfaces? A thorough dermatologic exam isn’t complete without checking areas like the mouth, eyes, and other mucous membranes.
This is especially critical for distinguishing between conditions like:
Stevens-Johnson Syndrome (SJS) – A severe, life-threatening reaction often triggered by medications, causing widespread blistering and mucosal involvement.
Bullous Pemphigoid – A chronic autoimmune blistering disorder that rarely affects mucosal surfaces but involves tense blisters on the skin.
Pemphigus Vulgaris – Unlike bullous pemphigoid, this almost always involves mucosal surfaces, causing painful erosions in the mouth and other areas.
By carefully inspecting the oral mucosa, conjunctiva, and other mucosal regions, healthcare professionals can catch early signs of severe dermatologic diseases and differentiate between conditions that look similar on the skin. Watch this short clip to understand why mucosal examination is a crucial part of any dermatologic assessment!
