In this episode i am going to discuss about some mysterious stones called shaligram stones or shila mainly found in gandaki river, Nepal. There Any stone u break has a Saligrama inside. Salagrama or Shaligram refers to a fossilized shell used in South Asia as an iconic symbol and reminder of the God Vishnu. SALIGRAMA - MYTH AND FACTS. “Saaligraama” (Shaligram/Salagramam), also called 'Salagrama' is a sacred stone preserved in many Hindu households as an object of worship. It is worshipped as representative of Lord Vishnu. According to hindu mythology it is made by the river worms called Vajra-Keeta. It's teeth/nails are said to be harder than granite stone. Shaligrams are usually collected from river-beds or banks such as the Gandaki river in Nepal. They are typically in the form of spherical, black-coloured Ammonoid fossils. Ammonoids are a group of extinct marine animals which existed from 400 to 66 million years ago. Shaligramas are mostly black coloured stones with marks, and are the fossilized remains of now extinct sea dwelling ammonites. Hence they are found in river beds and other regions that were once underwater, the most popular being the Himalayas and Nepal.

But according to Hindu mythology these stones are actually lord Vishnu. Lord Vishnu is often worshiped in many places in the form of a black stone. It is believed that due to a curse that Lord Vishnu turned into a stone. Lord Vishnu received this curse from one of His most loyal devotee, Vrinda. The curse turned him into a stone, popularly known as Shaligram. There was once a asura named Jalandhar. Jalandhar married Vrinda. And he had a boon that his powers will remain undiminished as long as his wife Vrinda is chaste. But Jalandhar was a very bad guy. Lord Shiva knew it well that unless the chastity of Vrinda, wife of Jallundhara, was stained, Jallundhara could not be defeated. So Lord Vishnu approached Vrinda in the garb of Jallundhara. And Vrinda lost her chastity. Then Lord Shiva defeated Jalandhar. Later knowing all this Vrinda cursed vishnu to turn into shapeless black stone. Vishnu accepted the curse and He turned into the Shaligram stone.
