One of the finest rallies ever as four championship contenders would go against eachother in the season finale.
However Mäkinen's title fight would end quickly because he hit a bump and broke his car and was out of the rally. Also Sainz had difficulties early on because he had a puncture and dropped out of the points. Rally looked to be epic showdown between McRae and Burns. but in spectacular fashion McRae rolled his car. Now only Burns was left and he cruised home and earning his 2001 world rally crown.
Rally was won by Marcus Grönholm and his team mate Harri Rovanperä was second earning Peugeot the 2001 Constructor's title.
Richard Burns died exactly 4 years after his 2001 title.
Rest in piece Richard. We'll remember you as a good driver, but also as a gentleman on and off the car.
