One bus with quite a tale to tell in the National Express fleet is 5409. New as part of a batch of an initial 9 Hybrids in 2011 to Birmingham Central, it moved to join Wolverhampton’s fleet in 2014. In 2017 it was sent away to Paul Clark Services in Wooten Bassett, though they never fully finished the project, and East Yorkshire’s Scarborough depot completed it. After some 5 years of work, it was re-engineered as a regular E40D, with a Cummins ISB6 engine, though with it having a smaller engine bay (Hybrids only have the 4 cylinder version), it does seem a bit louder than usual.
5409 re-entered service at the start of 2021 following a repaint out of the green Hybrid livery, though is untouched internally like the rest of these. It’s worth noting that more 61 plates are gradually being converted to straight diesel by East Yorkshire, with 5402/5412 completed and 5403/5405 being done at the time of upload. Wolverhampton operate all 30 of the Enviro Hybrids new to National Express, including 9 new to Dundee.
