The German Empire emerged after unification under Prussian leadership and, in less than half a century, became one of the most influential states in Europe. Proclaimed in Versailles in 1871 following the wars of 1864-1871, it was the result of Otto von Bismarck’s strategy and victory over France. The annexation of Alsace and part of Lorraine reshaped the political map of the continent and established a new balance of power. Bismarck sought to isolate France, maintain alliances with Russia and Austria-Hungary, and prevent a general war by constructing a complex diplomatic system - from the League of the Three Emperors to the Triple Alliance.
After his dismissal, the empire sharply changed course. It moved from cautious Realpolitik to ambitious Weltpolitik - pursuing colonial expansion in Africa and Oceania, engaging in a naval arms race with Great Britain, and intervening in global crises. The Moroccan crises, the formation of the Entente, rising tensions in the Balkans, and growing military power gradually isolated Berlin. Germany’s economic breakthrough, rapid industrialization, and social reforms turned it into a continental power, yet its ambitions and new foreign policy became one of the key factors that brought Europe closer to the First World War.
