India has achieved a major milestone with the launch of Vikram-32 (VIKRAM3201), the nation’s first indigenously developed 32-bit microprocessor for space applications. Designed by ISRO’s Semiconductor Laboratory (SCL) and Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC), this chip is built on 180 nm CMOS technology and is engineered to withstand extreme space conditions like high radiation, intense vibrations, and temperature variations.
Key highlights include:
32-bit architecture with floating-point support
Ada language support (C support under development)
Complete in-house toolchain by ISRO
Successfully flight-tested on PSLV-C60 (POEM-4 mission)
Applications in rockets, satellites, defence, automotive, and energy systems
While global consumer chips may be faster (64-bit, AI-integrated), Vikram-32 aligns with proven space-grade processors like the US’s RAD750 and Europe’s LEON, focusing on reliability and radiation tolerance over raw speed.
This achievement marks a big step towards Aatmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliance) in semiconductors and strengthens India’s position in the global space-tech ecosystem.
👉 Watch this video to understand the features, importance, and future impact of Vikram-32 on India’s space and semiconductor journey.
