India’s Ministry of External Affairs (M E A) said they had taken up the issue of misrepresentation of the Indian map with Saudi Arabia.
This comes a day after India Today reported on the newly released 20 Riyal banknote to mark the Kingdom’s presidency of the G20 summit, which excluded the whole of Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh, from the global map imprinted on one side of the currency.

“We have seen the banknote referred by you which gives an incorrect depiction of India's external territorial boundaries. The note was issued by Saudi Arabian Monetary Authority on October 24 to mark the occasion of Saudi presidency of the G20,” M E A spokesperson, Anurag Srivastava, said during the weekly briefing.

The new banknote features King Salman and the G20 Saudi summit logo on one side, with a world map highlighting G20 countries in a darker shade on the other.
The map shows the whole of Jammu and Kashmir, including Pakistan-Occupied-Kashmir (PoK) and Ladakh as a separate territory altogether. It does not even show PoK which includes Gilgit-Baltistan as part of Pakistani territory.


And when New Delhi checked the map, it was found that the distortion was in Indian map as well. India has taken up this serious matter with the Saudi Arabian embassy in New Delhi and the Foreign Ministry in Riyadh through the Indian mission.
While India is a member of the G20, Pakistan is not. The G20 summit will take place on November 21st and 22nd. 2020 in Riyadh. Saudi Arabia will have to make changes to the banknote else it would be untenable for India to participate.


Quoted Middle East Eye, 30 October 2020, the money sparked controversy because it included a picture of Kashmir which is disputed by India and Pakistan. There Kashmir is described as an independent state.
The map on the money sparked outrage in India by showing the Jammu and Kashmir region as separate from India.

But on the other hand, the map was welcomed by the people of Kashmir and those who sympathized with their struggle.

The controversy surrounding the map of Kashmir has been going on for decades, with a valley separated by a line of control (L O C) between India and Pakistan since 1972, when the two countries fought over it.

Indian-administered Kashmir, is considered the most militarized region in the world, with New Delhi having deployed more than 500,000 troops, and paramilitaries to the area.

A total of 100,000 Indian police and some 30,000 special police officers, were added in August 2019 to a region where more than 70,000 people, mostly civilians, have died.

Last year, Kashmir was put on lockdown, when the Indian government repealed Article 370, of the country’s constitution, effectively ending Kashmir’s semi-autonomous status, and forcing it to fall under India as a territory.
