Here's an (anime) adaptation of one of my custom superevents, the Second Pacific War.
For years, many had seen a conflict between the two superpowers of the Pacific brewing. Some had hoped that the Honolulu Accords would be able to cool tensions; for a while, it seemed as the treaty would accomplish its goal, as Japan agreed to return the ports of San Francisco and Los Angeles, albeit provided they remain demilitarized zones. These hopes were dashed by the refusal of the Japanese government, headed by Noribuske Kishi, to return the Hawaiian Islands to the United States, ensuring that the waters of the largest ocean on Earth only continued to get hotter.
The boiling point was the Oil Crisis of 1971. As the US' oil reserves ran dry and American citizens lined up for miles trying to get gas in their cars, America could only watch in anger as President Bennett meekly complied with the Japanese treaty terms, dictating that vast sums of American oil be shipped off to Japan, all while the American economy struggled and the Japanese were gearing up for war against an industrialized China. Already unpopular from the failiure to regain Hawaii, Bennett's party successor, George McGovern, and the Republican-Democrats lost in a landslide victory to Henry "Scoop" Jackson of the National Progressive Party in the 1972 Presidential election.
Upon taking office, Jackson swore that he would regain America's pride and retake not only the Hawaiian islands, but the rest of its former Pacific possessions as well, along with sweeping the Japanese menace from the Pacific Ocean. His words were not idle ones - Jackson froze all oil shipments to Japan, moved troops into and stationed warships in the previously demilitarized ports, and began a massive naval and military buildup. The Japanese, embroiled in the Great Asian War, were furious at the imperialist Americans' opportunism and declared that Hawaii was and would forever be just as an integral part of Japan as Tokyo was.
In 1974, as Chinese forces began advancing against the Japanese, President Henry Jackson received CIA reports that Kishi was planning to move nuclear missiles into Hawaii, in violation of the treaty signed by the two powers following the 1962 Hawaiian Missile Crisis.
President Jackson issued an ultimatum to the Japanese government: give up Hawaii and the US' Pacific Islands, grant independence to their Pacific puppets in the Co-Prosperiety Sphere, and pull their naval forces back to their home islands, or face the wrath of the biggest naval force assembled since the end of the Second World War. The Devil of Showa, defiantly grinning, replies with a simple "never."
The ensuing war will decide the true master of the Pacific for decades to come...
