Описание: This painting was inspired by a vintage photograph showing a farmer ploughing his field using a pair of oxen under dramatic monsoon skies in India, 1949. Traditional ploughing with oxen has been practiced for thousands of years, relying on animal power to till the soil, aerate it, bring nutrients to the surface, and bury weeds before planting. This method, once widespread globally, shaped rural landscapes and communities for centuries.

I chose slightly brighter colors for this piece to capture the freshness of a monsoon day. Painting the farmer’s face was straightforward, and I’m happy with how it turned out. I particularly enjoyed painting the ox on the right-hand side; the left ox gave me a bit more challenge, but it was a great learning experience. The foliage was kept abstract, and the wet-on-wet watercolor technique allowed the paint to create spontaneous, organic effects that enhance the feel of a monsoon scene.

Oxen were the primary draft animals used in Indian agriculture before the mechanization of farms. They are valued not only for ploughing but also for carrying loads and threshing grains. Even today (2025), oxen continue to be used in many rural parts of India.
