On 10th January 2026 I read an article on the BBC News website - https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c... - about how young people (and I’m going to say that’s people under 30) are getting “nostalgic” about 2016, ten years ago.
At my advanced age, 2016 feels like yesterday, but that’s not the point. As the article suggests, it’s more interesting to wonder why young people are looking back, not forwards.
I’ve had many discussions (with peers, with my online chums, with my adult kids) about modern life, fears for the future, fears about the planet, about jobs, security, “doomscrolling”, etc.
It seems a shame to me that young people are feeling nostalgic about anything. They should be looking forwards. But I guess the future doesn’t look very good, and, no doubt, that’s mainly due to people in my generation. I’m sorry.
“Nostalgia Ain’t What It Used to Be” is a song about all of this.
I am prone to a certain “wordiness” in my songs. I tend to get a little carried away. I wondered if I could distil the essence of the song into something more concise.
Hence “Retro-Future”. Arguably, I went too far with that one. It’s a nice little post-rock interlude but you’d struggle to have any idea what it was about. • Retro-Future
So, I moved on to “Echoes of Tomorrow”, which has the same tone as “Retro-Future” but it expands things lyrically.
I still wasn’t satisfied. My final (for now) attempt was “I’d Rather Look Back” • I’d Rather Look Back (Cracked Mirror Jazz ...
I hope this covers the main themes in a more lyrically succinct style. I tried different genres for this one, my initially favourites being a bouncy big band version and rather appealing boogie-woogie piano version.
[Verse 1]
We used to think the world was wide
That every road would take us somewhere
Now we scroll through glowing tides
Hoping someone else still cares
[Pre-Chorus]
Pictures frozen in our hands
A past we can’t quite understand
The future feels like borrowed time
So we chase yesterday’s light
[Chorus]
Echoes of tomorrow, fading slow
We hold on to what we used to know
Memories framed in pink and gold
Hope feels smaller than we’re told
Echoes of tomorrow, calling me
Back to the past we thought we’d see
[Verse 2]
Friends we loved are distant now
Their laughter caught in old-screen haze
We search for signs, we don’t know how
To feel the warmth of brighter days
[Pre-Chorus]
Every story scrolls away
We keep the pieces we can save
The future whispers, soft and low
But we’re too tired to let it grow
[Chorus]
Echoes of tomorrow, fading slow
We hold on to what we used to know
Memories framed in pink and gold
Hope feels smaller than we’re told
Echoes of tomorrow, calling me
Back to the past we thought we’d see
[Bridge]
Maybe one day we’ll look ahead
Without these ghosts inside our heads
But for now we linger, quietly
In the shadows of what used to be
[Chorus / Outro]
Echoes of tomorrow, fading slow
We hold on to what we used to know
Memories framed in pink and gold
Hope feels smaller than we’re told
Echoes of tomorrow, calling me
Back to the past we thought we’d see
