Every day about $9.6 trillion moves through global currency markets, and the US dollar is on one side of 89% of it. More than half of every central bank reserve on earth — 56.7% of $13.22 trillion — is held in dollars. And over $1 trillion in physical American banknotes sits outside the United States, roughly half of every note ever printed. One country, out of nearly two hundred, sits at the centre of all of it. This video explains why, properly: what the 1944 Bretton Woods agreement actually did, why the dollar kept its dominance even after the US cut its link to gold in 1971, the three mechanisms that really hold the system up, what that dominance buys America, and what the slow decline in the dollar's reserve share does and doesn't mean. No collapse predictions, no cheerleading — just the numbers and what they imply for anyone who earns, saves or invests outside the United States.
