We launched out of Buffalo Bay and spent the day fishing and freedive spearfishing the shallow reefs off Knysna.
The focus of this session was choosing to dive shallow structure — not because we had to, but to properly explore and understand the reef systems. We wanted to see how the reef looks and behaves underwater compared to how it appears on the fish finder, and how those differences translate to fish presence and movement.
We moved between different shallow reef types, freediving the structure, reading the terrain, and observing how fish hold on each reef. We managed to land a knifejaw along the way.
There were sharks in the area, but nothing aggressive or chaotic — just calm, natural presence that’s part of diving and fishing these reefs. No panic, no rush — just awareness and respect.
This video is about learning reef structure, linking sonar to reality, and understanding how shallow reefs fish and dive under real conditions.
