“Supersonic” is Oasis at their rawest and most confident. The guitar tone is deliberately trashy and abrasive, the groove is straight-ahead, and the whole thing screams early ’90s attitude. This is the sound I associate with Oasis just as much as their big singalong hits.
Released in 1994 as Oasis’s debut single and later appearing on Definitely Maybe, “Supersonic” set the tone for everything that followed. There are definite punk undertones here—simple, aggressive, and direct—but it’s filtered through a pop sensibility that makes it stick.
The chorus has a familiar melodic shape that reminded me a lot of bands like The Smithereens, and that blend of punk energy with catchy songwriting is part of what made Oasis connect so quickly. Sonically, there’s a lot happening under the surface: layered guitars, controlled chaos, and a rhythm section that keeps everything grounded while the guitars snarl on top.
As a classic rock drummer, what stood out to me is how little this song cares about polish. It’s about feel, attitude, and momentum, not perfection—and that’s exactly why it works.
This is Oasis before the anthems, before the stadiums—just a band kicking the door open and daring you not to listen.
