STORYLINE
Israeli archaeologists say newly discovered coins change the accepted belief about the construction in Jerusalem two millennia ago of one of the world's most sacred compounds.
It was long thought that the compound, known to Jews as the Temple Mount and to Muslims as the Noble Sanctuary, was built in its entirety by Herod, a Jewish ruler who died in 4 BC.
But archaeologist Eli Shukron of the Israel Antiquities Authority said on Wednesday that diggers have found coins underneath the foundations of the compound's western wall that date to 20 years after Herod's death.
That indicates Herod could not have built that wall.
Instead, he believes construction must have taken longer than was thought and was likely completed by one of his descendants.
