The Mental Health in Schools Podcast: Putting mental health and wellbeing at the heart of education

Описание: The UK government has identified an important role for schools in addressing the mental health needs of young people. But given the pressures schools already face, we ask: ‘is this really fair?’ In this podcast, we talk to young people, teachers and school leaders about what their schools are doing around mental health and their experiences of these initiatives. We share our analysis of government policies that say what it is schools should be doing, and we share findings from the archives about historical perspectives on the role of schools in addressing mental health. The results highlight some surprising commonalities in perceptions about schools’ roles in mental health – from the 1920s to today – and also bring to light serious tensions and challenges for schools in implementing government policies and responding to young people’s needs.
This podcast is the result of an exploratory study conducted by researchers working in education, policy studies, psychology and medical humanities across the universities of Bath, Bristol and Exeter, from 2022-23. This project was made possible through funding from the GW4 Alliance.
