Описание: 10 Things You Must Experience in Kerala – God’s Own Country
"Welcome to Kerala, a land of unparalleled beauty, rich traditions, and soulful experiences. Whether you’re an adventurer, a foodie, or someone seeking peace, Kerala has something for everyone. Kerala, often called ‘God’s Own Country,’ is a land of natural beauty, rich culture, and unforgettable experiences. Here are 10 things you must experience in Kerala.

1. Theyyam: The spiritual ritual art form or dance form of Kerala
My absolute favourite and the most unique thing I have seen in my life.Theyyam is a vibrant and deeply spiritual ritual art form of Kerala, primarily performed in the northern districts such as Kannur. I attended Theyyam at Payyanur in Kannur district. Theyyam is not just a performance but a cultural and religious expression that blends mythology, folklore, and devotion.

2. Cruising through the Backwaters in Alleppey
If your eyes haven’t witnessed the beauty of backwaters in Kerala then it’s time. And the best way to experience it is by cruising through the backwaters in a houseboat. A houseboat cruise in Alleppey will offer you a glimpse of Kerala’s tranquil beauty.

3. Attend a Snake Boat Race (the Nehru Trophy Boat Race)
The snake boat race (locally called Vallam Kali) is one of Kerala’s most exhilarating and culturally significant events. It combines tradition, teamwork, and celebration, making it a highlight of the state’s monsoon season. These long, sleek boats are named for their resemblance to a snake, with lengths up to 120 feet. Originally used as war boats, snake boats are now a symbol of community spirit, teamwork and religious devotion, especially during the Onam festival.

4. Kalaripayattu – The Martial Art of Kerala
Kalaripayattu is one of the oldest martial art forms in the world and it originated in Kerala.
It is believed that Kalaripayattu was developed by the warrior class of Kerala, around 3000 years back to defend their land and honor. This martial art focuses on flexibility, balance and strength through fluid movements and stances. It involves weapons like swords and sticks. Watching Kalaripayattu is not just about martial arts but also experiencing Kerala’s rich cultural and spiritual history.

5. Enjoy a laid back beach life in varkala - A Cliffside paradise in Kerala
Thanks to the clean and gorgeous beaches, cliffs, budget shopping and mouth watering food served at the cafes at the beachside in Varkala, I stayed here for over a week of 10 days. Known for its breathtaking cliffs, pristine beaches and laid back atmosphere, Varkala is a serene coastal town in Kerala. It offers a unique vibe that appeals to all types of travelers. Let’s dive into the essence of Varkala.

6. Enjoy the vibe of a dreamy hill station in Munnar, kerala
The tea gardens in Munnar are massive. The entire landscape of this place is magical. Plus the local bus rides are also fun. This place nestled in the Western Ghats of Kerala is a hill station straight out of a fairy tale. Munnar is home to sprawling tea estates that cover the hills like a green carpet. Walking through these plantations is an experience like no other.

7. The Kathakali performances - the iconic dance drama of Kerala
I understand not everyone is interested in classical dance and music. I wasn't either until I witnessed Kathakali performance in Kochi. Dating back to the 17th century, Kathakali is a traditional dance-drama art form from Kerala, renowned for its elaborate costumes, intricate makeup, and expressive storytelling. It is a blend of dance, music, and acting, portraying tales from Hindu epics like the Mahabharata and Ramayana. The most unique feature of Kathakali, something which I absolutely loved are the costumes and elaborated makeup.

8. Sadya - The mouthwatering cuisine of Kerala
The Sadya is a traditional Kerala feast, widely regarded as a celebratory meal, often served during festivals, weddings, and special occasions. The meal is traditionally served on a banana leaf, which is said to enhance the aroma and flavor of the food. The leaf is placed with the tip facing the left, and each dish is served in a specific order from right to left.

9. Witnessing the weaving of authentic Kasavu Sarees at Balaramapuram
These sarees represent the epitome of elegance and tradition of Kerala. Renowned for their simplicity and handwoven finesse, these sarees are a hallmark of Kerala’s cultural heritage and craftsmanship.

10. Kayaking in the backwaters to witness the beauty of Mangrove Forest
Kerala's mangrove forests are vital ecosystems that thrive along the state's coastline, and backwaters. They are not only a haven for biodiversity but also play a crucial role in protecting Kerala’s coastal areas.
