Special Education Basics

When a child needs special education there are so many questions. How do they access special education services? What kinds of services can they get? How can I help families through the process? Eileen Crumm, a special education advocate, will review the basic entitlements and processes of the IEP, giving professionals a clear understanding of what drives the special education process, and the ways it can differentially impact BIPOC families. We will explore strategies to support families through the IEP meeting, to create space for often overwhelmed families to be heard in decisions about services for their children. There will be a role play exercise for some experiential learning of what the IEP process may be like for families of preschoolers.

About the Presenter:
Eileen is a long time special education advocate, starting with her own child over 25 years ago. She has a Phd in political science and an MPA in quantitative public policy analysis. Eileen’s career in advocacy began with her son, who was in early intervention and special education. Eileen has been a primary instructor/curriculum developer for the national advocacy training course SEAT (Special Educational Advocacy Training) for the last 15 years, as well as the training chair for the Council of Parent Advocates and Attorneys. Eileen, as part of an Executive Team with two Assistant Directors, leads Family Resource Navigators. FRN is the Family Empowerment Center (FEC funded by California Department of Education) for Alameda County. FRN is a multilingual/multiracial/multiethnic community of parents, and offers special education workshops targeted to underserved communities.
