"She Had to Do It" - State Closing Argument in Devyn Michaels Murder Trial

Six separate inconsistencies in her police interviews were catalogued: the engagement ring she said was in the trash but wasn't, the gun safe she said didn't exist but did, the wallet she said Johnathan lost but was found in her underwear drawer wrapped in eight bags. And then the devastating question from detectives: Is it possible you decapitated him and don't remember? Her answer: "Yes, sir. It is very possible."

August 7, 2023: Johnathan Willette, 46, found dead in Henderson home, decapitated. Head never recovered. Devyn Michaels, mother of his two children and married to his adult son, was last to see him alive. She admitted striking him with a wooden stick but not decapitation. September 2024: Michaels pleaded guilty to second-degree murder. July 2025: Withdrew plea at sentencing, claiming innocence. Now faces first-degree murder trial. Judge excluded abuse allegations and disputed confession obtained after Miranda invocation.
