Empress Matilda lived from 1102-1167. She was the granddaughter of William the Conquerer and the daughter of King Henry I.
She was named heir to her father's throne but before she could claim it, it was taken by her cousin Stephen. After trying to take it by force, Matilda was forced to flee to Oxford Castle where Stephen's army besieged her for three months. she managed to escape and fled to France to live the remainder of her life before her son became King Henry II.
