I started modeling the Union Pacific back in the early 90s. Afterwards, maybe 2 - 3 years later I got my first brand new UP 844, a Rivarossi model that was considered back then to be the best on the market. But then, Italians are known for making super nice stuff. I started putting together my excursion train and eventually got brand new Rivarossi Challenger, the 3985 of course. Had to kitbash the box car to get something even remotely close, and the power car also had to be kitbashed. Then the tail car needed to be opened up with a platform. More kitbashing. Plus the fact I had to paint and decal everything.
There was still a problem.
Begin rant; this problem would continue for more than twenty years. No one (other than ungodly expensive brass models) made any water tender for the Union Pacific. Bachmann made water tenders for the Norfolk and Western 611, which could sorta pass as a tender for the Southern Pacific 4449 if repainted into the SP Daylight Scheme (something I did do btw). But no, no one made anything for the very railroad that made steam excursions a thing.
Oh, and I wasn't the only one waiting. Many, many more were waiting also. So many thousands of people just itching to literally hurl their money at any manufacturer who decided to produce them.
So that others might better understand, and since I'm from Kansas City, I'm using the Royals as the example. But imagine no one ever producing a #5 George Brett jersey. Not one. Ever. Then all of a sudden, after 20 some years someone with a brain FINALLY shows up and does it.
When Athearn did their two unit turbine models that included tenders (though the body was incorrect, many who managed to get some settled on them for their excursion trains), but Athearn was asked if they would ever produce the proper tenders for the steamers. They flat out said "No." KATO then produced them a couple years ago for N scale, and they sold a ton of them. I asked KATO if they would please consider doing them in HO, "We'll look into it." -_-
Well guess what...
Athearn, KATO, you lost out. You lost a sale... actually, you lost MANY sales. Over 20 years worth of sales. Way to go.
This is when ScaleTrains popped up on the scene. It's founders, coming from Athearn no less, did something smart and asked modelers what they most wanted to see produced. Well, the modelers spoke and about the biggest no brainer is now in my, and many others, possession after so many years of waiting.
ScaleTrains, thank you. You guys are great. And if you're looking for more ideas, UPP 2066 (the "domed" generator car) and the Idaho, UPP 203, or any of their inspection cars would be well sought after too. :D
All right, more railfanning coming up on Wednesday's upload, then next Sunday's video should be some N scale. Finally getting the chance to go back out to Rodney's again today, so be looking for that a week from today.
That's all for now and thanks for watching!
