Today I am going to show you the process of building a 80/20, extruded aluminum box truck roof rack with solar panels.
Building a 80/20 extruded aluminum roof rack for a box truck RV conversion is very straight forward. I had to make custom brackets that connect from the roof of the box truck to the rails on the extruded aluminum. They consist of 2 pieces of 1.5” angle iron welded together like a “Z”, with a backer plate added for a little more strength.
The main rails are 2, 6ft pieces of extruded aluminum from Tnutz.com. And the cross bars are 7ft pieces cut to fit the correct width.
When installing heavy solar panels like I am using, 1"x1" extrusions will not work. You will need at least 3, 1"x2" 10 series extrusions.
