While the 1979 Marichjhapi massacre remains a significant tragedy in historical memory, it was not an isolated event. This video uncovers a series of forgotten incidents where police opened fire on East Pakistan refugees in various camps across India between 1961 and 1974.
Using archival newspaper reports from Jugantar, we examine:
• 1961 (Bagjola & Coopers Camp): A violent clash on 27 June that left four refugees dead and many injured.
• 1965 (Mana Camp): Protests involving 5,000 refugees over a change in the "dole" system (survival rations) resulted in two deaths and eight injuries.
• 1974 (Mana & Nayagaon): Escalating tensions in September led to several more fatalities. In Nayagaon, police claimed "self-defence" after being surrounded by residents, resulting in two deaths.
These sources highlight a recurring theme of frustration among refugees due to long-term stays in temporary camps and a perceived "heartless" attitude from the central government regarding permanent rehabilitation.
