EPOXY: Mixing, Application and Issues

Common Questions with epoxy:

How much epoxy do I use?
Depends on cup size and what you're applying it to. Applying epoxy to paint will require less than applying epoxy to chunky. I use between 10ml and 20ml PER PART depending upon what I'm covering. If my first coat doesn't completely cover, I mix more and add immediately and smooth out.

How to avoid bubbles:
Do NOT press into your glitter and glide your finger. Rubbing hard on your cup or pressing quickly back and forth will add in bubbles.

How long do you wait between epoxy coats?
I generally wait 12-24 hours.

If you are going to be adding a second coat and not sanding or putting a decal on it, you can add the second coat after about 3 hours. Be gentle not to disturb the epoxy that is mostly cure and tacky by pressing too hard. Lightly apply the next coat.
This is done if your glitter isn't entirely covering or the first coat was too thin and you want good coverage for your decal.

How long does it need to spin on the rotisserie?
I generally leave it spinning 6-12 hours. This will depend on where you have it and what epoxy you're using.
Hand turning it will need to be manually turned for at least 1 1/2 to 3 hours depending upon the epoxy type. View my hand turning video below for more details on hand turning:

I generally will turn off my rotisserie and leave it if it's a full coverage. If it's taped, then I am able to touch the ends so I will pull it off and set it on the shelf. It doesn't matter either way since the epoxy is done moving at this point.

How long do you wait to apply a decal?
Once it's cured and hard to the touch you can add a decal. I always lean toward the safe side and wait at least 12 hours. Sometimes 24. FX cures quickly, especially if heat is applied while curing and some have said they are able to touch it and apply decal after 6 hours, but I am not that brave.

If you have a decal lift up on the edge after applying epoxy what do you do?
If you are unable to push it down and get it to stick so that it's completely covered in epoxy, then you will need to wait for it to cure and sand it off and reapply. Be sure to press it down securely on every edge so there is no lifting. Sometimes it's best to wait 12 or 24 hours to give the vinyl time to "cure" and be secure before applying epoxy.
