#ElectricSkyUK - Stratocumulus Castellanus Asperatus Clouds - 17th August 2023 late PM, Exeter, Devon UK
Here is a time-lapse of the "Asperatus Undulatus" clouds you often see preceding an elevated thundery plume, especially in the UK when importing air off the nearby Continent. With elevated cumulus fields, the cumulus is initiated from atmospheric waves saturating the air, rather than thermals that are heated or pushed up from the ground, so the base of the cumulus looks different, wavy and ocean-like, resulting in the "Asperatus" cloud type. A continuous line, almost like a mid-level convergence line, of this wave-induced cumulus features in this timelapse.
Here, a low continental plume saturated at mere 5000ft ahead of a series of incoming upper troughs (from storm "Betty"). The low starting height suggests this should be called Stratocumulus Castellanus, rather than Altocumulus Cast, perhaps.
