S African Artist Turns Waste into Masterpieces

Описание: A renowned South African artist has been creating great pieces of art from nothing but plastic for over 20 years.

"As a student at the time I couldn't really afford to access traditional ways of making art, like your paints, like your expensive ink brushes, like your canvases and so on, so I had to try very hard to make sure that I pursue my dream," said Mbongeni Buthelezi.

He said he heard people complaining about plastic, which he thought, is not a problem. "We are the problem as human beings," he said.

"It makes me feel very special, it makes me feel responsible, it makes me feel as if I am doing something good to the society, you know. That is why I feel so proud when I see a complete work of art that I produced from recycled materials," said Buthelezi.

Despite international acclaim for his work exhibited at the Museum of African Art in New York, the Goch Museum in Germany and the Prague Biennale, Buthelezi hopes his work will have a positive social and environmental impact on today's youth.

"It makes me feel great. It makes me feel that you know, one is trying to pave the way for younger other South African to follow. I hope young people can learn from what I am doing," said Buthelezi.

He said that he has built his life from absolutely nothing, as he is from a family that had absolutely nothing, but he managed to pull himself up and he never waited for anybody to come and assist him.

Buthelezi hopes to reach millions around the world through his recycling of plastics into creative artwork, encouraging everyone to look at waste in a different way and as a symbol of hope.
