Observe how Christ comes immediately to the defense of this woman’s words and actions as the apostles put the worst possible construction on her behavior with the ointments and her anointing of Jesus. He speaks well of her and gives her a good reputation that lasts even to today. Meanwhile, even as Judas plots Christ’s downfall, our Lord carefully protects his reputation among the apostles as much as possible, while at the same time making efforts to call Judas back from his doom. Christ always guarded the words of his mouth and the meditation of his heart. May we walk in the footsteps of Christ as we deal with those around us: defending them, protecting them, speaking well of them. As our Lord has done the same for us, speaking well of us before the Father in heaven (Romans 8).
