Description
Impact Strength is the ability of a material to resist sudden or shock loading without fracturing. It indicates the toughness of a material when subjected to high strain rate loading conditions. Impact strength is commonly determined using standardized tests such as the Charpy and Izod impact tests, where a notched specimen is struck by a pendulum hammer and the energy absorbed during fracture is measured.
Materials with high impact strength can absorb more energy before failure and are preferred in applications where dynamic or shock loads are expected. Factors affecting impact strength include temperature, material composition, heat treatment, and presence of notches or defects.
