The next person will chime in with Frankenstein, maybe the works of Edgar Allen Poe, but inevitably, when it comes to that traditional mix of dank and dark, romantic and repulsive, melodramatic and macabre, The Phantom of the Opera will loom large. Everyone knows the tropes. The masked monster at his organ is an image so burned into pop culture, it’s instantly recognizable. But few seem to venture to the original text. And I aim to change that.
