February is Heart Disease Awareness Month, and heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States — disproportionately affecting Black communities. Today, we’re creating with purpose while honoring pioneers like Dr. Daniel Hale Williams, one of the first surgeons to successfully perform open-heart surgery and a trailblazer in Black medical history.

As we crochet this heart together, let it be a reminder to:

Pattern:
R1:Make a slip knot and chain 3 single crochets
Insert your hook into the 1st single crochet(it should look like a ring)
Now make 6 single crochets into that 1st stitch and slit stitch into the 1st single crochet.

R2: Chain 1, make increase stitches(2 single crochets in the same stitch)until you reach the 1st single crochet. You should have 12 stitches, slip stitch and began round 3.

R3: chain 1, make 1 single crochet in every stitch (12 single crochets) slip stitch into the 1st stitch and cut off extra end, tighten and set aside. Repeat these steps for the other piece of the heart


R4: connect both heart caps by single crocheting into the 1st stitch of both caps side by side for 2 stitches, after that make single crochets until yiu reach the middle if the heart. You will slip stitch in the middle and continue working single crochets on the other side.

R:5-6 Repeat round 4

R7: chain 1, make 3 single crochets and 1 decrease ( 2 sc together) for the round until you reach the middle and slip stitch, repeat to the other side. Start adding polyfill slowly.

R8:chain 1, make 2 single crochets and 1 decrease ( 2 sc together) for the round until you reach the middle and slip stitch, repeat to the other side. Start adding polyfill slowly.

R9: chain 1 make 1 single crochet and 1 decrease ( 2 sc together) for the round until you reach the middle and slip stitch, repeat to the other side.

R10: chain 1, make 1 decrease stitch( 2 sc together) for the round until you reach the middle and slip stitch, repeat to the other side. Close the round with a single crochet abd cut off excessive yarn.

R11: cut off excessive yarn and push around the polyfill, shape your heart and add yiur finishing touches.
