Stoichiometry is used for calculations regarding reactants and products in chemical reactions. It is based on the conservation of mass, meaning the total mass of the reactants equals the total mass of the products. Here are the key aspects.
First is the concept of the mole, a unit representing 6.022 ×1023 particles, used to measure amounts of substances, also known as Avogadro's number. This allows chemists to convert between mass, particles, and volume of substances using molar mass, density, etc.
Next is the balanced chemical equation which has equal numbers of each element on both sides of the equation, ensuring the law of conservation of mass is upheld. Each coefficient in the equation represents the relative number of moles of each substance involved in the reaction and is vital when it comes to determining the limiting reactant which is vital to calculate percent yield.
