✈️ A Brief History of the L-29 & L-39 Jets
Aero L-29 Delfín
The L-29 Delfín — NATO reporting name “Maya” — was an early jet trainer built in the 1960s by Czechoslovak manufacturer Aero Vodochody. Over 3,600 L-29s were produced.
Designed as a straightforward, easy-to-fly jet trainer, the L-29 allowed air forces to replace piston-engined trainers and move to an “all-jet” training pipeline.
Beyond training, some L-29s were equipped for ground-attack or reconnaissance roles — carrying external weapons or cameras.
With its simple, rugged design and moderate performance, the L-29 eventually gave way to its more advanced successor — the L-39 Albatros.
Aero L-39 Albatros
Introduced by Aero Vodochody as the successor to the L-29, the L-39 Albatros first flew on November 4, 1968.
It was the world’s first jet trainer to be equipped with a turbofan engine — a big leap forward in performance and efficiency.
From 1971 onward, thousands of L-39s were built (nearly 3,000 in total), and they served as primary jet trainers for many Eastern Bloc and allied air forces.
Over time the L-39 also proved itself in light-attack roles, and — after the end of the Cold War — many found new life in civilian hands. Today, privately owned L-39s are popular for air shows, jet teams, and jet racing.
It was these very jets — the L-39 (and occasionally L-29 and other similar jets) — that formed the foundation of the race group known as the “Jet Class.” The “Jet Class” was first launched in 2002, originally as an exclusive series for L-39 “Albatros” jets.
Over time the class expanded to include other jets, such as L-29s, Provosts, Iskra, and even De Havilland Vampire jets — but the heritage and heart of jet racing remains tied to the Albatros.
🎯 Why the Jet Class is Unique
The Jet Class isn’t just fast — it’s the fastest class in the racing lineup today, with speeds regularly exceeding 500 mph.
Contrary to typical time-trial racing, jets in the Jet Class race head-to-head — side by side — giving spectators a visceral, edge-of-your-seat show.
With the relocation of the event to Roswell Air Center in 2025, the Jet Gold Race has taken on fresh energy — in new desert skies, with open airspace, high-speed turns, and a renewed crowd.
