Grotta Gigante is a giant cave on the Italian side of the Trieste Karst. In 1995, Guinness Book of World Records awarded the cave as the world's largest show cave.

It was first explored by Antonio Federico Lindner in 1840, since he was searching for underground water from the Timaya River so as to be able to plan the city's aqueduct.

Then in 1897, it was fully mapped by Andrea Perko. The Cave was properly equipped for guided tours in 1905 by Club Touristi Triestini and inaugurated in 1908.

The deepest point reached by the tourist route is 101.10 metres below the entrance.

In the "Altar Hall', a cozy and evocative environment, the entrance to the "Secret Grotto" can be seen.
This is a lateral branch that develops along a series of vertical walls to reach the incredible depth of 252 metres.

The Grotta Gigante is a giant cave on the Italian side of the Trieste Karst. In 1995, the Guinness Book of World Records awarded the Cave as the world’s largest show cave. Unfortunately this record was broken in 2010, when La Verna cave in France was opened to tourists.

The Grotta Gigante measures at a whopping 76.3 metres large, 98.50 metres high, 167.60 metres long.
