Ohio budget heads to governor, introducing flat tax and property tax relief

The Ohio Senate and House have passed a compromise version of the state budget, which could lead to significant changes for Ohio taxpayers and schools. It now heads to Gov. Mike DeWine.

Key components of the budget include the introduction of a flat tax rate of 2.75% for individuals earning more than $26,000. Additionally, changes to property taxes could affect school funding. Counties will have the option to reduce property taxes if school districts carry over more than 40% of their previous budget, a move that has drawn criticism from education supporters.

The budget also allocates $600 million for a new Cleveland Browns stadium in the suburbs, not along the lakefront where the team now plays. It would be funded by the state's unclaimed funds, which include unclaimed utility deposits and abandoned bank accounts. The plan has faced opposition from a group of former lawmakers who have filed a lawsuit to prevent the allocation.
