The coronavirus pandemic is a perfect example of how important mathematics is in the real world. In a video shot a week ago ( • HOW LONG WILL WE BE QUARANTINED???? | The... ), I made predictions on how many cases of coronavirus and how many deaths from coronavirus we would have in the US by the end of March. In this video, we will look at how close those predictions were to the actual numbers. You will get a glance of a model presented by the White House task force of the number of deaths per day. We will use information from that model, as well as the actual number of deaths from COVID-19, to make a new model and predict how many deaths will have occurred by mid-April, which is when the experts predict we will hit our peak. I give a call to action towards the end for all teachers of algebra. I challenge all algebra teachers to reconsider the way they are assessing students during this time of learning at home. I also give some examples of some projects that can be used in place of assessments.
