How do regular people shape Canada's AI future? My guest Khasir Hean is helping make that happen — and this episode tells you how to get involved.
Khasir is a software developer and ML engineer who burned out at a startup, found his community at Civic Tech Toronto, and ended up building something he hadn't planned for. What started as research & activist work turned into Technologists for Democracy, a grassroots volunteer organisation with a dozen people holding big tech accountable in the public interest.
Their most notable success: a self-driving vehicle pilot was recording pedestrians' faces in public without consent. TFD raised the alarm at City Hall. The company left Toronto. This is what a small group of determined people can do.
On March 9th in Toronto, TFD and the Tech Workers Coalition of Canada are co-hosting the People's Consultation on AI — a community-led response to a federal AI consultation that largely left regular people out of the conversation. Your voice matters in how this technology gets implemented. That's the whole point.
