Eyewitnesses state there was no fog at the time of the Polish president's plane crash in Smolensk and that the plane's engines weren't working properly and were cutting off. The Tu-154M had recently (December '09) undergone maintenance work at the Aviakor aviation facility in Samara, Russia involving the 3 engines, navigation, and electronics and only had 138 flight hours since the work was completed. The Polish prime minister, Donald Tusk, is reported to have flown to Smolenks on this same plane only 3 days earlier, at Putin's invitation.
An amended landmark gas deal between Russian and Poland was signed only 3 days later, and patriot missiles that were to have been in Poland at the end of April (2 weeks after the crash) have been postponed:
