India Records One of Driest June Monsoons in Over 100 Years | Rainfall Deficit 43% | News9

Описание: June 2026 is shaping up to be one of the driest starts to the monsoon season in over a century, with India recording a rainfall deficit of around 43%. The country has received only 85.2 mm of rainfall against the normal average of 165.3 mm, making it likely the fifth driest June since 1901.

Weather experts say multiple factors have weakened the monsoon, including stalled progression after early landfall in Kerala, weak monsoon winds, an unfavourable Madden–Julian Oscillation phase, and dry northerly winds. The absence of pre-monsoon cyclones and low-pressure systems has further slowed rainfall activity.

The IMD had earlier forecast near-normal rainfall, but conditions are now being reassessed. With the monsoon delayed over north India, including Delhi, early July may bring improved rainfall activity.
