SAM Bankman-Fried is currently facing seven conspiracy and fraud charges, accusing him of diverting billions of dollars from investors into high-risk trades and unauthorized uses. The Manhattan US attorney's office has also alleged that he used customer funds to cover escalating loan expenses at Alameda, purchase expensive real estate, support his philanthropic endeavors, and make substantial political donations. If found guilty, he could potentially be sentenced to life in prison.

The trial is anticipated to span approximately six weeks, presided over by federal judge Lewis Kaplan. Prosecutors made it clear at the trial's outset that they had not extended any plea deal offers. Various deputies and executives from the exchange, including the former head of Alameda and his on-again, off-again girlfriend, Caroline Ellison, are expected to provide testimony during the trial.

During the commencement of jury selection, Bankman-Fried appeared attentive, powering up his laptop and even sharing a smile with his attorney at one point. Despite the possibility of a lengthy prison term, he maintained an optimistic demeanor.

On the morning of the trial, around 20 photographers and a handful of reporters gathered outside the courthouse, a relatively small gathering considering the high anticipation surrounding the case.

Bankman-Fried's proceedings, as he encountered difficulties in transitioning from the jail where he is currently held to the courtroom according to Judge Kaplan, who acknowledged the delay's cause to the nearby proceedings.
