Before I get into this, English isn’t my first language, so I’ll do my best. Also, I don’t care if this gets long. I need to talk about it because I feel like I’m losing my mind. For context, I (34F) was married when I was 22. My late husband had a daughter from a previous relationship, Bailey (14F now), and I’ve raised her like my own since she was two. Her bio-mom has never been in the picture. My husband passed away when Bailey was four, and since then, it’s just been us. I don’t see her as my “stepdaughter.” I’ve been her mom in every way that matters. Then, eight years ago, I met Jesse (35M). We took things slow because I was a single mom, and Bailey was always my priority. Over time, Jesse became part of our lives. Bailey started calling him “dad” a couple of years ago, and he’s always treated her kindly. I thought we were a family. We’ve been engaged for two years now. I’m six months pregnant, and we were set to get married in August. Jesse’s even talked about adopting Bailey after we’re married, saying he wanted to surprise her because she means so much to him. I believed him. I feel stupid even typing that now. This is where it all blew up. Last weekend, we hosted a dinner at our place for some friends. Bailey wasn’t there—she was staying over at her best friend’s house. It was supposed to be a happy night. Everything was fine at first. We were drinking, eating, joking around. Then someone asked about the honeymoon. I casually said we were planning on bringing Bailey along. Jesse and I had already agreed on this months ago. Out of nowhere, Jesse said, “Actually, I don’t think we should bring Bailey.” I laughed because I thought he was joking. I asked, “What do you mean? You know we’re bringing her.” Jesse put down his drink and said, “I think it’s time we focus on our real family. You, me, and the baby. We don’t have to pretend anymore, you know? Bailey’s not really ours.” The room went dead silent. I can’t even explain it. Everyone just stared at him. I must’ve looked insane because I turned to him and asked, “What the fuck are you talking about?” He shrugged, like it was nothing, and said, “Come on. Bailey’s sweet, but she’s your stepkid. It’s not the same as having our own baby. I’m just saying we don’t need to keep acting like she’s something she’s not.” I couldn’t breathe. I swear I asked him, “Are you serious right now?” probably five times because I couldn’t understand. He didn’t stop. He went on about how now that we’re having a “real child,” we don’t have to include Bailey in everything. How we could finally just be a “normal family.” Like Bailey was some fucking chore I dragged into his life. At that point, I lost it. I don’t even remember exactly what I said because I was yelling. I told him Bailey was my daughter, that she’d always come first, and if he didn’t get that, he could get the hell out of my house...
