The head of the UN's nuclear watchdog agency Mohammed ElBaradei has been awarded the Roosevelt Institute Four Freedoms award in the Netherlands on Saturday.
The International Atomic Energy Agency ( IAEA) head received the award for doing "everything in his power to prevent and control nuclear threats."
In accepting his award, ElBaradei said that the current global approach to security was "dysfunctional and can not endure."
"With the full need to work urgently towards a development of a new collective security system - a system that is effective and equitable," ElBaradei said.
The Roosevelt Institute Four Freedoms are awarded to men and women who have demonstrated the principles of President Franklin Roosevelt's 'Four Freedoms' speech.
On 6 January 1941 President Franklin Roosevelt made a speech to the US Congress which outlined the fundamental principles for a peaceful and democratic world.
Known as the 'Four Freedoms' speech, Roosevelt proclaimed that freedom of speech and expression, freedom of worship, freedom from want, freedom from fear were essential attributes for mankind.
Mexican writer Carlos Fuentes was honoured with the Freedom of Speech and Expression award.
Fuentes is a reputed novelist and essayist in the Spanish language, and his books have been widely translated.
The Freedom of Worship award was received by Brother Alois, representing the Brothers of Taize, from south Burgundy in France.
The Taiz� Community consists of around one hundred Brothers from both catholic and protestant backgrounds and from more than twenty-five different countries.
Founder of the Grameen Bank, Professor Mohammed Yunus was honoured with the Freedom of Want award.
During the 1970s he began offering small loans to poor female entrepreneurs in Bangladesh.
He has since been recognised as the 'founding father' of microcredit, a successful form of development aid that Crown Princess Maxima of the Netherlands has taken a great interest in.
