We're designing a radical new synthesiser and we've decided that we're going to use custom hardware and an STM32 Nucleo to create a player interface. For now, we're using a Windows PC to generate the sound and communicating between the two using USB.
Out player interface consists of a turntable controller (inspired by a Hurdy Gurdy handle) and some "strings" which are played like violin strings - although they don't sound themselves.
We've been trying to make a sound engine that works dynamically instead of generating waveforms and processing them like a conventional synthesiser. Whilst this is still the plan, it is proving much more difficult than I had imagined. So, to get a working instrument up and running (and hence increase my enthusiasm for the project), I have decided to to implement a conventional waveform / filter sound generation system for now so we can quickly create a usable instrument.
However, I have been continuing to think about how physical instruments work and how we might apply that to the Heresy. Included in this video are a couple of my investigations into this.
