Overview development progress of SDE, Senai Desaru Expressway in Southern Corridor of Malaysia, Johor.
Development update as inFebruary 2026
Info:
The Senai–Desaru Expressway, also known as E22, is a key east-west highway in the Malaysian state of Johor. Stretching roughly 77km from Senai in central Johor to the eastern tourism hub of Desaru, this expressway was originally completed in 2011 to shorten travel time from more than two hours via older roads to one hour.
It has become a vital artery for residents, logistics and tourism traffic in the Southern Corridor of Malaysia.
As traffic volumes increase with economic growth and rising tourism to Desaru and nearby coastal destinations, the original two-lane sections of the expressway have been identified as a bottleneck for smooth traffic flow, especially during peak periods and holiday seasons
To address this, the Federal Government and the Ministry of Works have prioritised an upgrade program to widen parts of the highway from two lanes to four lanes.
This expansion is intended to improve traffic capacity, reduce congestion and support better connectivity for both local commuters and tourists. The current upgrade focuses on a 9.34km section of the expressway between the Johor River Bridge at KM49.3 and the Sungai Semenchu area at KM58.7.
This stretch is being widened from two lanes to four lanes in both directions. The contract value for this phase is approximately RM160 million, and the project duration is planned for 30 months. Traffic management plans have been put in place during construction to ensure that work does not severely disrupt existing traffic flow, and authorities have emphasised that operations are proceeding efficiently.
As of early February 2026, officials report that the upgrade project has reached around 55% physical completion. Progress is on schedule and the works remain within the planned timeline, with full completion targeted for April 2027. There have been no reported requests for extensions to the project timeline.
The Senai–Desaru upgrade is aligned with other highway improvements in Johor, such as ongoing widening works on the North-South Expressway around Senai and traffic alleviation projects in Greater Johor Bahru.
These efforts collectively aim to strengthen connectivity across the Southern Corridor of Malaysia, which is central to both domestic mobility and cross-border economic flows.
In summary, the Senai–Desaru Highway expansion is a major infrastructure project in southern Malaysia that is progressing steadily
At 55% completion and on track for an April 2027 finish, the upgrade from two to four lanes on a critical stretch of the highway is expected to boost capacity, improve safety and support the tourism and economic growth of the region.
Ongoing traffic management and well-coordinated works aim to maintain service during construction and future extensions may further enhance connectivity along this essential corridor.
